Many fans have said this year that the Chicago Bears defense has vastly improved. Coming from the 2022 season into the 2023 season the Bears defense on paper had vastly improved by just names that were brought in. From one of the worst defenses in the league to a top 12 defense, is a vast improvement. In the last several weeks of the season the Bears had 10 interceptions, and 5 from week three to week seven.
That sounds really good, and improvement throughout the season. Let’s take a look at the names of the QB we have picked off:
- Week 3: Blain Gabbert – 2 Ints.
- Week 5: Sam Howell – 1 Ints.
- Week 7: Brian Hoyer/Aidan O’Connell – 3 Ints.
- Week 11: Jared Goff – 3 Ints.
- Week 12: Joe Flacco – 3 Ints.
- Week 16: Taylor Heinicke/Desmond Ridder – 4 Ints.
Of those QBs, only 3 of them were starters, and one of them, most likely, won’t be next year. Blaine Gabbert what’s the number to quarterback and came in against Chicago when we were being blown out in Kansas City. Brian Hoyer is the number two quarterback for the Raiders and Aiden O’Connell was the number three quarterback. Jared off is obviously the starter for Detroit as well as Joe Flacco for the browns even though two weeks prior he was sitting on his couch. Taylor Heinicke was quarterback number to name the starter over Desmond Ritter and yet still had to play both quarterbacks against the Bears.
Only only two of those teams are teams going to the playoffs. Also, the two teams going to the playoffs, we lost to despite picking them off. Statistically, the Bears did improve defensively, and the addition of Montez Sweat did help. The addition in Free Agency and the draft has assisted in the defense attaining more talent. The problem still remains; we have only been able to force turnovers against bad quarterback play as well as mostly all non-starting quarterbacks in the NFL.
So I must ask the question did our defense really get better as the season went on and I would only have to say no. The Chicago Bears defense even with the addition of pass rusher Montez sweat, still can only picked off below average quarterbacks, and when they pick off above average quarterbacks or good quarterbacks, still end up losing the game.
In conclusion, most NFL teams would fire the defensive coordinator for such mediocrity especially when adding talent to the roster. Most people would fire their Defensive coordinator for three terrible will come back loses. Only the Chicago Bears would be a team to keep their coaches with such statistics. To finish the season the exact same way you started the season and against an opponent who you have lost 10 straight to if there’s not change from top to bottom there will be no change from the first year to the next. It seems the Bears are going to repeat the cycle once again.
